Correctional Management Institute of Texas
Training the Corrections Field . . .
Increasing emphasis in the criminal justice system on prisoner reentry has resulted in the development and support of new programs that allows for the strengthening of services offered to offenders as part of their release from incarceration. The primary goals of such programs aim to bolster offender success and reintegration in the community through a focus on known correlates of recidivism such as substance abuse, education, employment and others. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), with assistance from the Department of Justice, has established a pre-release reentry program that is currently implemented at five state jail sites. Dr. Gaylene Armstrong, Associate Professor in the College of Criminal Justice and Research Director of the Correctional Management Institute of Texas, has been awarded a $100,000 contract to evaluate the TDCJ Prisoner Reentry Initiative. She will work with Dr. Todd Armstrong of the College of Criminal Justice and graduate student research assistants to complete the evaluation.
