The Correctional Management Institute of Texas is offering a Media and Public Relations Training Program for qualified staff working at all levels in jails, prisons, parole, probation, pretrial services, juvenile justice, and other corrections-oriented organizations. This program is designed for staff responsible for communicating information to the media and to the general public, whether in a controlled environment or in the midst of a crisis situation. The training will be held at the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Participants selected for this 28-hour program will be provided information related to controlling an interview, conducting a successful news conference, writing a news release that gets attention, presenting your case to the public, identifying and using interviewing skills, utilizing strategies for communicating effectively, and identifying strategies for working with current and emerging media.

All of our instructors have vast experience with the media.  In addition, we are pleased to announce that one of the instructors this year will be Kelli Arena, an award-winning, 25-year veteran of CNN and former chief correspondent covering the U.S. Department of Justice.

The Institute is now accepting nominations for this class, which will be held from Monday, July 20, 2009, to Friday, July 24, 2009. The class will be limited to 30 participants. The participant must be nominated by his/her Supervisor (preferably Director/Sheriff/Chief). Please send in o­nly o­ne nomination form along with a recommendation letter explaining the benefit of this class to your agency and why the nominee should be accepted.

If the nominee is accepted to the class, both the nominee and the nominator will receive a confirmation letter.

Cancellation Policy:
If paid, full refunds will be given to those who cancel in writing more than ten (10) working days prior to the training. A refund of 70% of the fees paid will be authorized when a written request for cancellation and refund of conference or program fees is submitted less than ten (10) working days prior to the scheduled start of the program. If unpaid, those who cancel in writing more than ten (10) working days prior to the training will have all fees waived. When a written request for cancellation is submitted less than ten (10) working days prior to the scheduled start of the program, the participant will be responsible for 30% of the conference rate at the time they registered. The Correctional Management Institute of Texas reserves the right to retain or collect fees in full for those who fail to cancel in writing prior to the training or for those who fail to attend. Substitutions are permitted at anytime.
